Dear HIDTA Directors,

As you know,  the Obama Administration’s Inaugural National Drug Control Strategy was released on May 10.  The Strategy is a comprehensive and balanced strategy of prevention, treatment, and enforcement.  A key element in the Strategy is decreasing drugged driving.

The National Highway Safety Administration (part of the US Department of Transportation) conducted a National Roadside Survey in 2007.  For the first time, the Roadside Survey tested for the presence of drugs in drivers.  The Survey found that 11% of weekend, nighttime drivers tested positive for the presence of illicit drugs.  You play an important role in educating parents and their children about the importance of sober driving. 

So, in preparation for summer driving season, we would like to provide you with the following online information -

1. Central webpage of information, including a fact sheet on drugged driving
2. Public service announcement featuring Director Gil Kerlikowske that can be placed on your HIDTA’s website
3. Icon for your website to highlight the issue of drugged driving
